Chapter 15

Manhattan

“I appreciate you looking into it for me,” Nora said. “I’ll keep trying.”

“Remember, our job is a journey,” Guro Mjelde said. “One step leads to another, then one more. Eventually you find answers.”

“I know. It’s frustrating sometimes, but that comes with the territory.” Nora rubbed her forehead. “I’ll figure out who he is.”

“I know you will. And I will help. I promise I will not stop looking.”

“I appreciate it. Let me know if you hear anything from Harry.”

“I will,” Guro said. “He said he would be in touch.”

“Don’t worry,” Nora said. “I’ll set him straight if he doesn’t play ball.”

Guro didn’t know everything about Harry, though she knew enough. “He is a field man,” Guro said. “A man of action. Men like that decide to work with others in their own time. I can wait.”

Nora thanked her Norwegian friend and clicked off. At times like these she wished she wasn’t on speaker. Then she could slam the receiver in its cradle. Maybe even break the phone. Then she’d feel better.

Stop it. Any therapist would tell her violence was not a useful form of expression. Nora would tell the therapist exactly what they could do with that opinion. And then she’d be in more trouble.

“Guro’s right,” Nora said to herself. “I’ll figure out who he is. Eventually.”

She looked out the window of her office. Manhattan stretched out in front of her, or at least the sliver of it she could see between skyscrapers, all the way to the East River. Someone out there knew about the man who had broken into her house, who had tried to kill her. She’d find them eventually. Then she would make someone pay.

A knock sounded on her open office door. “Special Agent Doyle?”

Nora turned to find a strange face leaning around the door frame. “Yes,” she said.

The body beneath the face came into view. “My name is Craig Boulder. I’m with the mayor’s office.”

Nora’s back stiffened. “Hello.”

“May I come in?”

Nora gestured to a chair across from her desk. She did not stand when Craig stepped in and closed the door behind him. “Do you have five minutes?” Craig asked as he sat down. “I won’t take long, I promise.”

Craig’s suit was well cut. Same with his hair. Nora’s suspicion level ratcheted up a notch. “I can spare five minutes.” She leaned over the desk. “Do you have any identification?”

“Of course.” Craig smiled with practiced ease, showing perfect teeth.

She took the card Craig had removed from a pocket. A city-issued identification card for one Agent Craig Boulder, Department of Investigation. Her eyes narrowed. The word Temporary ran across the top of his card in bold print. Nora kept hold of the card when she looked up. “You’re temporary?”

“I’m a consultant.”

“For?”

His smile never wavered. “The mayor’s office. Department of Investigation.”

“What are you investigating?”

“Background information.”

Answers like that shouted lawyer. “Who’s your supervisor?”

Craig gave her a name. This time she had to scratch a non-existent itch by her ear to cover the reaction. Craig’s boss was the head of the mayor’s re-election committee.
